Mogo Fundraiser : Dolly Nye

MOGO FUNDRAISER ORGANISED BY DOLLY NYE

Dolly writes:

The world is aware of the horrors that have transpired with the fires across Australia.

Like so many people I am heartbroken for what these fires have done. They are a domestic terrorist that cannot be negotiated with, they are indiscriminate and gut wrenching, leaving a trail of destruction that will take many years for our nation to recover from.

Many of you would know that I am Yuin/Walbunga from the town of Mogo on the South Coast of NSW. Mogo has been devastated by the fires on New Year’s Eve. So many of the homes and shops have been lost, and the local environment has been destroyed. Our little community has suffered severe losses, but thankfully no lives.

Like many Aboriginal communities, Mogo is a low socio-economic community with a population of about 300 people. But Mogo is a strong community that will bounce back from this because of the people who live in the community, the people who love the community and the people who visit and have loved ones who live there.

Several homes in Mogo were destroyed in the fires. My aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews lived in these homes. Every home had multiple generations of their families. Homes included parents with children with disabilities; grandparents, parents, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; families with young children and foster children; and a family with elders and young adults. There were also other people in the community who have been in Mogo for many years who have lost their family homes and businesses. Some of them literally got out with the clothes they were wearing, and many do not have contents insurance.

I want to help my mob to be safe and give some level of comfort. I’m coordinating this fundraiser for the Mogo community who lost family homes in the fires. These funds will go towards helping the lives of the families who have no home contents insurance and lost everything.

Any financial contribution you can afford is welcome. Every little bit helps.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like more information.

Warmest wishes and thanks, Dolly xx
