Link Road connection to the Princes Highway getting closer

Council advise that the south Batemans Bay bypass is a step closer to reality, with their construction of Glenella Road between George Bass Drive and Heron Road now complete.

In their latest e-news Council says "Connection of the new road with the Princes Highway now falls to Roads and Maritime Services, which is developing designs for the highway intersection after allocating $30 million to the project in January. Council's $10 million part of the project was funded by the NSW Government.

It included building a bypass road with a westbound overtaking lane, two major intersections, a major roundabout at George Bass Drive, widening a section of George Bass Drive to four lanes and extending Heron Road at Catalina. Safety features include wide shoulders, wide centre-line treatments, safety barriers and intersection lighting. Council have now secured NSW State funding from the RMS to design & deliver the Princess Hwy upgrade & connection to the Link Rd near Heron Rd. It is understood that the RMS are currently working on designs and will be responsible for delivery of the works as well. The timeline will be a matter for the RMS to advise however both the Premier & Minister have indicated they want the RMS to ‘get cracking’. Once the connection of the Highway and Link Road is open to traffic it is hoped that the bypass will take pressure off Beach Road as the primary feeder to Catalina, Batehaven and beyond to Surf Beach, Lilli Pilli and Malua Bay whilst enabling the lands adjacent to the by-pass to be further opened for development. Beach Road is currently classified by the RMS as a Regional road and due to its current network significance RMS provides financial assistance to council for its management that includes maintenance and renewals. It is still not known if Eurobodalla Council will inherit sole financial responsibility for Beach Road once the by-pass is opened. In the meantime Council are pressing ahead with plans to further widen Beach Road to cope with increased traffic suggesting that they still believe that there will be continued flow buildup from Batemans Bay to Batehaven.
