Greens: Coles has done a ‘bagflip’ and today announced it will continue to provide plastic bags, fre

In a statement in response to Coles announcing it will continue to provide plastic bags, free of charge, in its stores across NSW the NSW Greens Environment spokesperson Mehreen Faruqi said:

“I share the community's frustrations that Coles has caved in and will continue to provide plastic bags throughout its stores in NSW. This is what happens when you outsource environmental decision making to big business. “We can't trust the big corporates like Coles to do the right thing for our environment, oceans and marine life. We need Premier Gladys Berejiklian to show some guts and ban plastic bags, like every other state and territory. “We have all seen the devastating impacts of plastic pollution our environment, oceans and marine life. The community is already taking action but more needs to be done by our politicians. “A Boomerang Alliance poll showed 63 per cent of NSW residents support a plastic bag ban. Now we need a NSW Government commitment to ban the bag.”

Above: On their website Coles announced the Coles Better Bag saying: If you forget to bring your own bags, Coles has introduced the Better Bag. The Coles Better bag is made from 80% recycled material and is bigger, thicker and more durable than the previous bags. You can buy the Coles Better Bag for just 15c and use it over and over again. It is also not as bulky as other reusable bags, making it easier for you to fold and store in your handbags or backpacks. When you’re finished with the Better Bag, it can be recycled through the REDcycle bins at your local Coles store.
