Last Wednesday, as part of informing and engaging the community in the development of the Arts facility at Mackay Park, PerfEx (a lobby group for the Arts in the local community) organised a presentation at the Soldier’s Club by Indi Carmichael and Linda Heald.
Indi is our Regional Arts officer and the woman behind our Arts Information bulletins and inspiring events, from events in our libraries to The Basil Sellers Prize, some forty exhibition last year. Linda is the head of libraries which have become such an interactive community space over the years.
In an excellent and engaging presentation, covering Linda and Indi’s extensive experience in theatre and theatres, inspiring examples and images were presented. Kim Bush, their manager, also came and added further insights to Council workings on the project.
There was a lively discussion and question-time afterwards where Indi and Linda encouraged us to think creatively and laterally on the use of the facility (theatre in the pool, outside performances, light shows, maybe a hologram or two? Home grown theatre, not just touring theatre coming here, work experience, workshops and techno-theatre).
There were folk representing CABBI Art there and (old-time) dance (wanting a sprung floor included) and it was again emphasised how important acoustics were for small as well as big audience music/events. This reminds us how widely the community may use this space.
Though this will not be a fix-all facility for all groups in the community it could be an exciting and innovative facility that enlivens the Bay and attracts not only new Arts people to the area, but brings out those people already keenly interested and those who could be. It will not be in competition to the Soldiers Club or similar; but more a community interactive space that it was going to be part of the mix of facilities in the area, as ever.
Also mentioned was the passing of a motion at Council to demolish the Bowling Club as part of RMS leasing the site as a works site for the building of the new bridge over the next few years. The idea of a community wake -a Bowlo Bash -was raised to recognise the passing of this icon.
