Batemans Bay Seahawks edge out Demons

The Batemans Bay Seahawks kicked off their season on Sunday with a nail biting 4 point victory over the Eastlake Demons. The Demons came out firing and kicked the first 3 goals of the game but then three quick goals to the Seahawks had them only 2 points down at the first break. Withstanding an Eastlake onslaught in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter the Seahawks kicked away to a 22 point lead at half time thanks to a five goal half from full forward Ross Hummel. The Seahawks were once again on the back foot in the third quarter as the Demons chipped away and went into the final break only 11 points down. In what was a seesawing final quarter Eastlake hit the front to lead by 2 points, but a snap goal from new recruit Cody Cameron put the Seahawks 4 points up with only 2 minutes left on the clock. The ball then made its way down to the Demons forward line where they were awarded a free kick and had a shot to win after the siren but didn’t make the distance. The Seahawks were best served by big Ruckman Karl Dehne, Ben McKay, Ross Hummel whilst the backline led by Coach Michael Kenny and Luke Dudley were strong all day.

In the Reserve grade fixture the youthful Seahawks came up against a strong Cooma Cats outfit. Missing some key players and a lot of players playing together for the first time the signs are looking good for a much improved season from our Reserve grade boys. Dean Price managed to kick 2 goals but the biggest roar of the game was when Irish recruit Nathan De Roiste kicked his first career goal. Mark Adams made a big impression in his first game back in Seahawks colours for 4 years while the young brigade of Jacomb Graham, Byron Van Dyk, Brodie Kauffman and Dylan Art were standout performers. Both Grades play the ADFA Rams this Saturday at ADFA Oval.
