Why I joined Toastmasters

Introducing Batemans Bay Toastmaster member Glenice Tulip I first became aware of Toastmasters in 1993 when a chapter was opened in the school in which I taught in Castle Hill. My boss asked me to be the observer, as it was for our students only, and I was very impressed with what it was doing for the students' confidence and self esteem, as well as their skills. When I began teaching International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Nepal, I encouraged my students to join Toastmasters, because they needed to pass a speaking test in English, which many found very intimidating. Again, I asked to be an observer. Thanks to Toastmasters, my students who joined, passed their speaking test with flying colours, and also improved their Listening, Reading and Writing skills, because of their added confidence and expanded vocabulary. As soon as I found a Toastmasters in Batemans Bay, I came along and joined- I'm no longer teaching full time, so I didn't want my speaking skills to 'go rusty'. Also, it meant I had new friends, whom I would never have met through my other leisure activities. Has it been a learning curve? Definitely!!! The range of knowledge and interests of the members astounds me, and has taught me much already. Furthermore, I believe I'm enhancing the skills I have, and adding new ones, with the help and support of the group. I love the structure, but easy going atmosphere of the meetings and look forward to every one
