A spokeswoman for Council told The Beagle that in consultation with Mayor Liz Innes, Council’s General Manager Dr Catherine Dale decided on a change of approach for Eurobodalla’s 2017 Australia Day Awards. “The retirement of a key staff member involved in the awards’ organisation and a newly-elected council forced us to look at the event. “Despite our very best efforts to promote the Eurobodalla awards, it had become increasingly difficult over a number of years to attract a broad range of nominations. We were effectively competing with well-loved and established ‘local hero’ events in our key towns. “The Mayor and General Manager agreed on a hiatus for the 2017 Eurobodalla awards, allowing the new Council an opportunity to consider how best to recognise and celebrate our eminent local citizens. “We can assure the community that Council is certainly not stepping away from Eurobodalla citizen awards. “Meanwhile, Council continues to provide financial support to the Australia Day celebrations in Narooma, Moruya and Batemans Bay, and the Mayor will officiate at the Australia Day citizenship ceremony in Moruya.” Eurobodalla Shire Council is proud to support the Australia Day celebrations taking place across Eurobodalla on 26 January 2017.
