Wrap with Love making a difference

Wrap with Love is a volunteer organisation based in Sydney that has for over 25 years distributed handcrafted blankets (wraps) throughout the world. With the help of aid agencies, wraps are given to people in crisis following a natural or man made disaster. Since 1993, volunteers in Batemans Bay and Nelligen, and towns and hamlets north and south, have been creating knitted or crocheted squares which have been sewn together to make rectangular wraps to give comfort and warmth to those in need.

Normally our wraps are delivered to the Alexandria warehouse and from there they sent to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Pacific Islands and to war torn areas such as Syria and Afghanistan.  New Year’s Eve changed this dramatically. Instead, the Warehouse in Alexandria sent volunteers to deliver bales of wraps to fire affected communities along the coast. In addition, they gave 50 wraps to the Batemans Bay Group to distribute locally to people who have lots their homes during the bushfires. So far, 30 of those wraps have been given to charities in Batemans Bay and Moruya who are helping the bushfire survivors. Another 13 wraps have been given to individuals who have come to our attention by word of mouth and following a letter published in the local paper.

In addition to the wraps donated by Wrap with Love Alexandria, our local ladies have submitted 24 wraps during this month. Our wraps will over the next few months be made available to those who have been severely affected by the fires. Our local group meets every second Tuesday and last Wednesday of each month at 10am-12 noon in the meeting room at St Bernard’s Church, David St Batehaven. Our gatherings are informal, friendly, chatty and driven by cuppas and slice or cake. We exchange ideas and share knowledge about our craft and completed wraps are often displayed. Newcomers are most welcome. There are also groups in Narooma and Cobargo and individuals who prefer to work at home, the latter contacting us when they would like to have their finished wrap collected.
