With Regret: the convenient loss of memory of Eurobodalla Council

Letter to the Beagle Editor,

Broulee Land Clearing “legal”

I refer to the press release of 29 June 2021 by Eurobodalla Shire Council concerning the clearing of land at Broulee. The Council –owned road reserve of “roughly 2,300 square metres” was earmarked for inclusion with the Community land in 2003. Council was aware of this because the documentation was forwarded to Council by the Broulee Mossy Point Community Association. Information was also provided that showed that the road reserve was part of an approved Eurobodalla Landcare project site from 2004 and clearly signposted as such.

In 2012, Council removed vegetation immediately adjacent to and over the existing water main. Broulee Mossy Point Dunecare raised concerns about the clearance and was advised by Council “That it is with regret that the necessary consultation was overlooked on this occasion and further steps are being undertaken to ensure this oversight does not happen again”. The letter was headed “Community Land Broulee”.

It is a pity that Eurobodalla Shire did not heed this undertaking before recent clearing of vegetation.

Convenor
