Will Schweikert pass muster to stand against McBain

Writer: The BeagleThe Beagle

It is understood that the Liberals might have found themselves a possible candidate to offer what they can by means of a challenge to Labor's Kristy McBain for the seat of Eden Monaro. The Bega District News has reported (March 24th 2022) "The Liberals aren't "writing off" the seat of Eden-Monaro as two former hopefuls contest a last-minute preselection in the battleground seat.

With Prime Minister Scott Morrison expected to call the federal election shortly after next week's budget, his party is still yet to pick a challenger to Labor's Kristy McBain in the ultra-marginal electorate surrounding the ACT. Of the the former hopefuls is ex councillor of Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mark Schweikert. Mark only managed to secure 51 votes in the Council election of 2021 and was not re-elected. It is understood that Mr Schweikert had put his hand up as a candidate in previous elections and byelections, but failed to secure the nomination losing out to Fiona Kotvojs. Of interest is that the only other possible Liberal known to be standing for preselection is, according to the Canberra Times, ex-Navy seaman Jerry Nockles. It appears that having lost three elections in a row Ms Kotvojs is not throwing her hat in the ring though the Senate seat of Jim Molan will soon become empty. It will be interesting to see if Mr Schweikert passes muster for upcoming Federal election pre-selection given the current protestations within the Liberal party of PM Morrison's interference and "Captain's Picks". In the meantime Liberal senator Jim Molan has embarrassingly been left to denounce Labor initiatives and regurgitate previous grants and spending as if they are new. His tenure as a senator will end in June 2022.

Above: Like peas in a pod the PM and Schweikert enjoy a good photo-op This brings back memories of the photo shoot that has Morrison in this jet-fighter. On his arrival to the photo-op the backing music was "Highway to the Danger Zone." He was late and they had to play it twice. How good are photo ops?
