NSW gyms, yoga classes, dance studios and indoor pools for up to 100 patrons will be allowed to reopen from June 13th. Even tattoo and massage parlours can reopen with up to 10 clients. But can we have a Council election in September 2020 - NO. And why not? Well the NSW Local Government Minister apparently thinks differently to her Premier, Health Minister, the Australian Electoral Commission and even the Federal Speaker of the House directing the Eden Monaro by-election for July 4th 2020, Minister Shelley Hancock has NOT announced why Council elections across NSW can't be back on the table for September 2020. There is NO way she can argue Covid. So why is she hesitating? Is it to ensure the predominantly Liberal held metropolitan Councils can stay in power for another year uncontested. As to why Local Government NSW or even the Shadow Minister for Local Government, Greg Warren, aren't asking the question is unknown. In the meantime, in Eurobodalla for example, the current councillors are given the grace of another year unchallenged with the Mayor continuing to receive her package worth $100,000 without any contestation from the likes of fellow councillors Lindsay Brown, Rob Pollock or James Thomson who would all like a chance to be top dog. Adding to the insult of the Ministers failure to provide any explanation is the building resentment by many across the state wanting to see reforms in their councils applying climate change policies, social reforms and expanding community engagement but not able to vote to bring change. The question has to be asked "Is the Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock now manipulating the election process?" And is Labor allow it by saying and doing nothing? Who benefits by putting off the election for another full year? If the election is in 2021 will the term only be three years or will this create new cycle? In regional NSW we tend to not have the political factionalism that is seen in city councils. Ours tend to be independent councillors as is the example on Eurobodalla and Bega. So it goes without saying Back in March NSW Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock announced that council election for September 2020 would be postponed until September 2021. But is that official? NO IT ISN"T In order to be official she MUST create an Order and have it recorded in the Government Gazette. Has she done that ? NO. Further reading : May 24th - Plenty of time yet to hold local Government elections in September 2020 So, while we are now on track to voting on July 4th in the Eden Monaro by-election recognising and abiding by social distancing, while we are riding public transports, going to pubs and restaurants and looking to be allowed to do so much more between here and September 1st such as flying it appears that we can't vote in a council election. Remember that Ms Hancock has only said NO 2020 council elections backing it up saying the Electoral commission agrees. If that is the case then why has the electoral commission agreed to the Eden Monaro by-election? As you can see in the video below the EDEN Monaro election process to ensure social distancing and adherence to good hygiene practice is well in hand. So what is the ulterior motive the Minister for Local Government has in not allowing September 2020 local government elections.
