What’s in a Promise? - Legacy Narooma

by Ross Arnold, Chairman, Narooma Legacy Group

Over the last week all over Australia, volunteers were out selling Badges, Bears and Pens.

You may have noticed us at Woollies, IGA or on the flat at Narooma. Outside the bank in Moyura or in the main street of Bermagui.

Who is Legacy and what do we do?

In the trenches of the Western Front during World War I, a soldier said to his dying mate

I’ll look after the missus and kids”.

This became known as “The Promise” – and it is still kept today.

Legacy was formed in 1923 to honour that simple promise.

Keeping that promise, providing the same stability, guidance and assistance that a partner would normally provide to his or her family.

Today, Legacy supports 43,000 partners and children of veterans who gave their lives or health serving our country.

Our work can mean a child gets an education and a fair go, a widow is not disadvantaged and alone, and a family is not torn apart by the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress or other physiological injuries.

A great deal of our Widows are older, and with age comes many different challenges, recent experience with Covid has highlighted how numerous people have suffered from social isolation.

Regular contact from Legatees has helped to relieve some of this isolation providing assistance, accommodation, medical and social support.

With the help of Legatees volunteers, who stay in touch with all families, Legacy ensures families receive their Legacy entitlements and access to government benefits, along with the support they need.

For all those wonderful people who stopped and donated, or bought a Pen, Badge or Bear a big THANK YOU.

For all those who we missed it is not too late to make a donation.

This Friday there is a Charity Golf Day at the beautiful Narooma Golf Course.

Half price fees apply, and anyone can win.
