“What qualities/qualifications do you look for in a councillor?”

The Beagle Editor, Recently, Our Council Our Say conducted a survey asking the question:

“What qualities/qualifications do you look for in a councillor?”

The questions were put via our Facebook page, shared with several noticeboards and forwarded to those on a mailing list. Anyone could respond via these avenues.

The response was terrific. Top of the list of ‘qualities’ was ‘honesty’.

Other qualities/qualifications and actions needed (many of which were duplicated) included ….

Brains/balls, no puppets, able to listen to and act on community wants, less secrecy, more transparency, environmental/marine sanctuary/trees with breeding hollows/wetlands/urban green space protection; climate change acknowledgement; diligence, humility, confidence determination, approachability, knowledgeable, integrity, compassion, empathy, logical, altruistic, scientific/technical background; not too old, optimistic planner, libertarian; mix of Laird Hamilton/Elon Musk; commitment to achieve community wants; flexibility, open mindedness, look to the future; scientific/engineering background; not belonging to a political party; youthful, progressive, good listener delivering results; intimate knowledge of local geography/community needs/demographics, putting needs of community first; good understanding of Local Government policy, legislation, governance & budgeting; ethical; steel like determination, not a one issue person, broad interests, thick skinned, able to identify major issues, focus on major challenges, able to handle many projects simultaneously, accept little pay for many hours work, extensive industry experience, diplomatic, ability to see through smoke & mirrors, organised; capacity to listen, consider suggestions ie 50m rock/ocean pool; courage to fight for what is right; divestment of personal interests; no political affiliations; intelligent, well informed, open, hard working, good communication/listening skills, courageous, committed to common good; no developers/real estate agents; business person, moral integrity, common sense, community focussed, realistic, able to stand up to the general manager, committed to whole truth.

So there you have it. An honest, hard working, ethical, well informed, intelligent, logical, altruistic, thick skinned candidate with good communications skills and no political affiliations should have little problem being elected, right?

Seems, ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’.
