Susan and Jenny represented the Quota Narooma Club at the first War Animals Remembrance Day, which is now officially gazetted to occur on 24 Feb. The animal memorial was beautifully decorated with purple poppies for the occasion.
Words from Narooma R.S.L..
"The President and members of Narooma RSL sub branch are grateful; and overwhelmed by the community support and attendance at our very first memorial service for our animals of war, which will always be held on 24 February from now at our War Animal Memorial at Club Narooma.
About 60 people were in attendance- which for work day and our first event, is so heart warming. So thank you very much.
An inspirational address by President Paul about Kuga (dec) VC an Australian Service dog (Belgiun Malinois) who saved his Regiment by drawing fire away from their position even after being shot 5 times. Kuga was posthumously awarded the VC and it was accepted by Cpl Donaldson VC and Odin on his behalf.
This was followed by a reading of the poem "Animals of war" penned by Santina Lizzio and read by Gilly Kearney and a beautiful and heartfelt address by guest speaker Professor Geraldine Hunt (sister of Dr Kate le Barrs- one of our local Vets about the key role our animals play in our lives both at theatres of war and away from it all.
We are specially grateful to have Geraldine and Kate and their father retired Roya Naval Officer Michel Le Barr as his wife (and their mother) passed away last week and our thoughts go out to them at this sad time.
The Community added added dignity and ceremony to the proceedings featuring a song written especially for our animals war by choir member and WIRES volunteer Sandra Doyle.
Community groups including Narooma RSL sub Branch Eurobodalla WIRES, Eurobodalla Animal Welfare League and Dog Obedience Club, Marine Rescue Narooma, Narooma QUOTA, Rotary, CWA, The Narooma Community Choir and a strong contingent from Narooma High School and Carroll College Broulee laid wreaths.
The Australian Flag will be flying at half mast today as a mark of respect.
Our brave animals. We thank you for your service. We thank you for your loyalty. You too served with dignity and pride
Lest we forget"
