Tuross Head Men’s Bowls

Tuross Head Men’s Bowls

The second round of the 2020 Pennant season has proven to be a disappointing one for the Tuross Head Club with both sides well beaten in their matches. The Grade 5 side travelled to Malua Bay and suffered their biggest defeat for some time. All three rinks were outplayed by the hosts. Malua Bay won 42 of the 63 ends to give them a 74 shots to 38 shots victory. As a result they won 10 points to nil.

For the Tuross side Joel Hilliard’s rink lost their first game in two years going down 28 – 14. Carol Williams was competitive for the first half of the game but went from 10 all after 12 ends to a final score of 12 – 26. Noel Downie’s team was also competitive for most of the match but ended up on the wrong side of the scorecard going down 12 – 20.

The Grade 6 side played at home against a very strong Braidwood outfit and found the going very tough. Braidwood started strongly and held a comfortable advantage throughout the game. The one bright note for the locals was the effort of the team of Len Downie, Chris Codington, Brian Currie and Doug Williams. They looked like they were in for a very long afternoon when they were down 1 – 11 after 9 ends. They staged a great comeback and grabbed the lead at 15 – 13 with one end to play. They then looked to have the game well in hand before the Braidwood skip played a great shot to kill the end with his last bowl. Braidwood then managed to pick up two shots on the replay of the end to level the scores at 15 all!

The other two Tuross rinks struggled. After holding a slender 10 – 9 lead after 11 ends, Ray Downey’s team lost their way and went down 13 – 24. Stan Peck’s side found the aggressive play by their opponents difficult to counter and lost 13 – 28.

Braidwood chalked up a total of 67 shots to Tuross’s 41 to win the match by 9.5 points to 0.5.

Next week the Grade 5 side are at home to Dalmeny while the Grade 6 side travels to Tomakin.

On the local scene the 2020 Championships will start next Sunday with the first round of the Major Singles to be played. The draw has been posted on the board and circulated to all members.
