Tuross Head Hosts Second Successful Bowls Carnival

The weather has been kind for two weekends in a row to enable Tuross Head to hold its second successful Bowls Carnival! The Men’s Bowling Club hosted 72 players from Wollongong in the north, Canberra in the west, Merimbula in the south and several nearby clubs as they competed for $3660 in prize money in the Lakeside Triples. Over the two days they played 6 games each of 14 ends of 2 bowl triples. As it was an ‘open’ event teams were any combination of female or male.

The great weather was complemented by the greens being in excellent condition with the participants full of praise of the work of our greenkeepers led by Tim Watson. It made a great picture looking from the greens over Coila Lake.

Three games were completed on Saturday with only three out of the 24 teams managing to win all three games. Bombaderry players Steve and Kathy McMahon and Terry Hooper led the way from locals Des Jackson and Denise and Bruce Lidbury. Ulladulla Players Greg Brumby, Mike Frame and Chris Godwin were third. Two other teams, skipped by Joel Hilliard and Henry Butler, were undefeated but they were behind on the leader board as they recorded a draw.

From the first game on Sunday things started to change. Both leaders suffered defeats to see them slip down the rankings. Godwin moved into first place followed by Hilliard. Lidbury stabilised a little by winning his fifth game but McMahon slipped further with a second loss on the day. Godwin and Hilliard consolidated their position with another win while the Towradgi team of Phil Matthews, Chris Roberts and Dave Roberts moved up the rankings with their fourth win.

The last game provided critical. Godwin went into the game as the only five game winners and a win by any margin would be enough for them to win the Tournament. However, they went down 9 – 10 to allow Tom Shapcott (Merimbula), Ben Shapcott (Wollongong) and Joel Hilliard (Moruya) to grab the major prize money when they kept their undefeated record – they had a draw in their first game. They won overall with five and half wins and a margin of plus 27.

Brumby, Frame and Godwin finished second with 5 wins and plus 24 while Roberts was close behind with 5 wins plus 21.

Fourth place went to the Canberra side of Kevin Hogan, Bruce Moore and Ian Whybrow who finished strongly with 4 wins, a draw and a margin of plus 26.

Local team of Des Jackson and Denise and Bruce Lidbury were rewarded for their efforts managing to finish in the money with fifth place.

The last prize winners went to the Malua Bay side of Murray O’Brien, Steve Maher and Tony Melrose who had the best win in the last game.

Overall it was a great weekend with several people working hard to ensure the success of the tournament. A big thanks to bowls organisers Marcel Kors and Andrew Farrington for all the work they did in publicising the event and keeping on top of all the organisational matters. Members of the Women’s Club assisted by organising raffles, taking lunch orders and preparing afternoon tea. A big thanks to Rose Farrington, Irene Macdonald, Vickie Wheelehan, Jenny Madden and their helpers.

A big thanks to Doreen Monks, Ian Wratten and John Monks for umpiring. We received great support from Chris Pollock and the bar staff and finally, but not least, a special thanks to the green keepers for their tremendous work.

Winners Tom Shapcott, Joel Hilliard and Ben Shapcott with President Col Fletcher
