Tuross Head Bowls Report

The fourth round of the 2023 Open Pennant was not a good one for Tuross Head with both sides suffering defeats. The Grade 5 side had its first loss of the year when they were comfortably defeated by Bodalla. The Grade 7 side had another very close game going down to Tomakin by three shots.

It was a reality check for the Grade 5 side who had recorded three good wins before travelling to Bodalla. Margaret Downey, Rose Farrington, Marcel Kors and Bruce Lidbury managed to score the only points for their side when they held on to draw their match. Down 18 – 14 after 13 ends they won three ends in a row to grab the lead at 21 – 18 after 16 ends. Bodalla had the better of the last 4 ends picking up a shot on the last end to draw level on 22 all.

Costly stumbles in the back end of their game saw John Monks’ team go down 20 -13. The scores were level at 11 all after 17 ends but the Tuross team dropped 5 shots on the 18th end and another 4 shots on the last end to lose the game. Denise Lidbury’s team had a day to forget being totally dominated by their Bodalla opponents.

Bodalla won the contest 79 shots to 45 picking up 9.5 points from the two rink wins and the one draw. Tuross only managed 0.5 points. Heading into the bye Tuross still sits on the top of the table but all other sides will narrow the gap next week. Tuross has 27.5 points, Narooma 20, Bodalla 11.5, Braidwood 11 and Moruya 10.

The Grade 7 side had their third very close game in the four rounds played. It was a very close contest against Tomakin on all three rinks with only 3 shots separating the sides at the finish of the 63 rinks. Graham Garner, Carol Williams, Doug Williams and Ray Downey recorded the only Tuross victory with a 17 - 16 win. They had a great start and set up a 10 – 3 lead after 8 ends. Tomakin chipped away at the difference and was able to score 3 shots on the last end to almost steal a win.

Dagmar Voges, Chris Coddington, Lorraine Wake and Allan Etheredge had a great battle in their game. They held a slender 9 – 6 lead after 12 ends only to see Tomakin win the next 6 ends to move to 14 – 9 in front. With one end to play Tomakin lead 15 – 10 but Tuross scored 4 shots to make the final score 15 – 14.

Bill Burch, Ray Brown, Di Challice and John Fahey fought back strongly in their game after being down 10 – 4 after 11 ends. Going into the last end they were down 14 – 12 and looked to have stolen the game when they held several shots. However, the Tomakin skip held his nerve and he was able to get the shot to give his side a 15 – 12 win.

Tomakin had an overall win of 46 – 44 giving them 9 points with their two rink wins. Tuross was awarded 1 point. After Round 4 the point score in this grade is: Moruya 26, Bermagui 20, Tuross 13, Malua Bay 12 and Tomakin 9.

Both of the Tuross sides have a bye next week.
