Tuross Head Bowls news

The finalists in the 2020 Minor Singles Championship have been decided following two excellent semi-finals. In a repeat of their epic clash in the 2019 semis of this event, Pater Macdonald and Marcel Kors battled it out over 41 ends to the delight of the spectators who were present. Kors continued his great form and had the best of the first half of the game. He was able to build up a good lead and by the 23rd end he held a 22 – 9 advantage. However, this score did not reflect the closeness of the play. Almost every end was tightly contested with only one score of 3. Macdonald seemed to be favouring his ‘dog inflected’ injured hip.

Gradually the momentum in the game started to change. Macdonald chipped away at the margin and by the 33rd end he had narrowed the deficit to just 3 shots at 25 – 22. On the next end Kors scored 3 shots to move in reach of victory at 28 – 22 only to see Macdonald again surge. By the 38th end the scores were locked at 28 all and the excitement and tension increased. Kors moved to a 30 – 28 lead on the next end. Holding his nerve and form Macdonald played very well in the next two ends to claim a sensational win 31 – 30. This was a wonderful come from behind victory and reversed the 2019 result. Kors was disappointed but very gracious in defeat.

Macdonald’s opponent in the final will be Brian Currie who demonstrated his growing confidence to hold off a gallant effort by Jonathan Green. Currie started well and quickly moved to a 11 – 4 lead. Green competed well but struggled to score multiple shots. Currie was able to continue his domination of the match and he ran out winner 31 – 20.

The Tuross Club held a special ‘Fun Day’ on Sunday 13th of September in an effort to provide our members with some relief from the difficult times we are experiencing. It was wonderful to see 55 players on the greens! Even though it was all about enjoyment the best performing side on the day was recognised. The winners were Tracey Stewart, Di Challice and Marcel Kors – some consolation for Marcel following his loss in the Minor Singles semi-final. Almost 70 members shared in a fantastic BBQ lunch – enjoyed while following the social distancing rules! Well done to the team who put it all together!
