Today is World No Tobacco Day. Tell a smoker they stink

Writer: The BeagleThe Beagle

Why is it that we tell people not to smoke because it is bad for their health when we could be telling them that they stink, their cloths stink, the cars stink, their homes stink and when they are smoking outside it permeates everyone within 10 metres - in fact they may as well unzip and piss on our legs. Known as thirdhand smoke, their cigarette smoke clings to clothing, skin, and hair. In the home of a smoker the environment contains active chemical substances, which have been linked to multiple health issues so one wonders why smokers flaunt the health of others including their own children. Why don't we collectively say something? Do you have a friend, relative or co-worker that stinks of cigarettes. It is akin to rancid BO, and sadly they either don't know, or care. Oh, and then there are the butts. Guess what, they are NOT organic and don't just decompose over night. Cigarette filters contain cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that does not readily biodegrade and can persist in the environment. Today is World No Tobacco Day. Did you know that cigarette butts are consistently the most-littered item in NSW?

According to the National Litter Index, 1.32 billion cigarette butts are littered in NSW each year. Not only are cigarette butts unsightly, they are toxic and harmful to the environment. They are easily carried in stormwater runoff through drainage systems and eventually to local streams, rivers, and waterways.

Today is World No Tobacco Day. Tobacco smoking is the greatest single cause of premature death and is a leading preventable cause of morbidity in NSW. Find out about the many benefits of quitting with positive changes occurring within days and weeks of giving up smoking at: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/tobacco/Pages/smoking-health-and-quitting.aspx
