Teachers to strike in South East on June 30

There will be NSW Teachers Federation and IEUA (NSW/ACT) Joint Strike Action in Batemans Bay on June 30th. NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos said thousands of lessons were not being delivered each week because of a lack of teachers.

Internal Department of Education documents showed 1,906 permanent teaching positions were vacant last month – 67 per cent higher than at the same time last year.

“We have too many children across NSW missing out every single day because of the teacher shortages,” he said.

“This is a classroom crisis. That is why public and Catholic school teachers will be striking for 24 hours on Thursday 30 June across NSW.”

Independent Education Union of Australia (NSW/ACT) Branch Secretary Mark Northam said: “Teachers and support staff in Catholic systemic schools are rallying to signal their discontent with Catholic employers, who cite the NSW Government pay cap as the reason they have failed to address teachers’ pay.

“Teachers’ salaries are not keeping pace with comparable professions, support staff deserve a better deal, administrative burdens must be cut, planning time increased, and crippling staff shortages must be addressed.

“Across NSW and the ACT, teachers and support staff want the best possible future for education. Their goodwill has evaporated and it’s time for Catholic employers to commit to real improvements beyond the NSW Government’s artificial salary cap.”
