South Coast Police District is urging members of the community to plan ahead to ensure everyone can celebrate Australia Day in a safe and enjoyable way this year.
Operation Australia Day 2022 will commence tomorrow (Wednesday 26 January 2022), to keep people safe across the state as they come together with family and friends.
A large-scale police operation will be underway across the state, with a highly visible police presence on our roads and at planned celebrations within the regions.
Local police will be patrolling coastal tourist locations such as Huskisson, Batemans Bay and Narooma, as well as working alongside specialist units including the Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order & Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Dog and Mounted Command, and PolAir.
Our beaches and waterways will be monitored by police from the Marine Area Command, working in conjunction with Surf Lifesaving NSW and Maritime NSW.
South Coast Police District Commander Acting Superintendent Ray Stynes said local police will not only be focusing on alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour, but will also be ensuring relevant Public Health Orders are being observed to maintain a COVID-Safe celebration.
“Australia Day 2022 is a day to reflect, respect and celebrate the Australian spirit so we ask the community to be patient and respect each other and any restrictions in place,” Acting Supt Stynes said.
“We must also remember that as we celebrate with mates, we are still in a pandemic – so be mindful of social distancing and all other restrictions which remain whether outdoors or at licensed venues.
“It’s important to remember that alcohol consumption when around our waterways or on the roads can have fatal consequences – please always be mindful of your surroundings, watch out for your mates and drink in moderation, particularly with the forecast warmer weather across the state.
“Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will also be out on our roads. If you are caught doing the wrong thing, you will be arrested and put before the courts.”

Hot weather is expected over the next few days, and police are urging revellers to keep informed on the conditions, look after their health and remember the four key messages to keep healthy in the heat:
1. Drink plenty of water (limit hot, sugary, or alcoholic beverages)
2. Keep cool (stay in the air conditioning, if possible)
3. Take care of others (visit or contact those at risk of heat-related illness)
4. Have a plan (know who to contact if you need assistance and seek medical advice if you feel unwell).
