Rebates included in Bega Shire water notices

Great news for our Bega Shire readers.

Over 6000 customers will benefit from a $50 rebate (equivalent to approximately 16,500L) when they receive their quarterly water notices over the coming week.

Council recently resolved to apply the rebate to all accounts where the recorded water usage for the property was 10% or more higher than for the corresponding period over the last three years.

In many cases the additional water used can be attributed to preparing for and directly fighting the devastating fires.

Bega Valley Shire Council General Manager, Leanne Barnes, said the water usage rebates are among a suite of measures being introduced to further support our community through the recovery phase.

“Key to this is the establishment of a detailed framework surrounding rates, fees and charges relief; and a formal commitment to further advocating for our community to the other levels of Government,” Ms Barnes said.

“Many of the proposed waivers are currently the subject of a mandatory 28-day exhibition period, however we are confident of being able to move forward and provide assistance across a broad range of areas very soon.

“While the local community has displayed unbelievable resilience during the bushfire disaster it is vital that Council can provide a level of surety moving forward.

“As Council we remain steadfastly committed to doing everything we can drive and provide all the necessary support through the recovery phase,” Ms Barnes said.

Council understands that large accounts can be problematic, and we are willing to consider extended payment arrangements with customers. These agreements involve regular payments (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) via your preferred payment method.

While the application of the water rebates is solely based on the comparative amount of water used, anyone not in receipt who feels their individual situation justifies assistance, is encouraged to write to Council via email at council@begavalley.nsw.gov.au or by post to PO Box 492, Bega NSW 2550.
