Police report of Sunshine Bay house fire

FATAL HOUSE FIRE - SUNSHINE BAY

An elderly man has lost his life trying to save his house from fire. About 8pm on Sunday 18th August 2019 the man who was the only occupant in the house, was woken by his bedding on fire. The male received significant burns to 40% of his body while trying to remove the bedding before collapsing in the house. A motorist driving past noticed the fire and used a garden hose in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

Two officers from Batemans Bay Police station attended the scene and entered the house to drag the man to safety. Local Fire units attended and extinguished the fire. The man was conveyed to Batemans Bay hospital where he received emergency treatment but died a short time later. The two Police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation.

Crime scene attended and report the fire was caused by a Wheat Heat pack. Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.
