Ovals’ lighting moves out of the dark ages

Eurobodalla’s sports clubs can light up the night with ease thanks to a new control system being rolled out across the shire’s sports fields.

Eurobodalla Council’s facilities coordinator Paul Bladen said the new Halytech system lets club representatives turn sports field lights on and off with a simple text from their phone.

“Not only is it much easier to manage than the existing token system, but now clubs only get charged for the time they use the lights,” Mr Bladen said.

Under the token system, club members needed to purchase physical tokens from Council. Each token would run the sports field lights for a given period.

“Previously the lights could go off during a game if not enough tokens were purchased, or the last token fed into the metre might light the field well beyond the time required. Now the club sends a message from their phone at the end of play,” Mr Bladen said.

The fields at Bill Smyth Oval, Mackay park, and Hanging Rock already have the Halytech system installed, with the Bodalla ovals and the Gundary soccer oval also scheduled to come online with the new system.

Mr Bladen said lighting at these ovals was being upgraded at the same time.

“We’re moving to LED lighting, which is more energy efficient, longer lasting and financially sustainable,” he said.

The new control system and lighting upgrades to lighting were funded by a NSW Government Stronger Country Communities Fund grant.
