No-cost and low-cost energy solutions online

Eurobodalla’s householders can join an online workshop that helps them with simple no-cost and low-cost ways to save energy, reduce power bills and lower emissions next week.

From 11am on Tuesday 16 June, Eurobodalla Council will be sharing some insights and tips on saving energy and staying warm this winter. Council’s sustainability coordinator Mark Shorter said the workshop would consider fundamental principles of home energy use and provide tools for working out savings.

“We’ll cover a range of topics and answer questions such as the rebates and support available, how to know when you are getting the best deal from your electricity retailer, and what actions result in the biggest energy reductions,” Mr Shorter said.

He said there were many no-cost or low-cost solutions for homeowners to reduce their energy spending.

“For example, when we talk about upgrading to a low flow showerhead we often only think about the water savings that this will deliver, when in fact – due to the energy needed to heat water – it saves a lot more on electricity,” Mr Shorter said.

“A two-person home with daily, five-minute showers would knock off $150 on their annual water bill by switching to a water-efficient shower head and $500 each year in electricity savings, given a typical electric storage hot-water system.”

Mr Shorter said reducing energy waste could also make a big difference in keeping homes warm and comfortable during winter.

“If you can afford them, double-glazed windows are really great, preventing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer,” he said.

“Most people think double-glazed windows are out of reach due to cost. But did you know you can achieve the same insulating properties just by using backed curtains combined with a pelmet?

“These are the kinds of tips and tools we’ll be sharing on Tuesday.”
