Narooma VIEW Club Discovers the 4 Pillars of Health

Writer: The BeagleThe Beagle

When listening to Country Health Tai Chi and Qigong Instructor Jenny Bowles at their October Meeting, the members of the Narooma VIEW Club discovered “Exercise can take the place of medicine, but medicine can never take the place of exercise”!

In speaking to the group, Jenny outlined the 4 Pillars of Health through the practice of Tai Chi and Qigong – Breathing, Good Posture, Dynamic Relaxation and Power of the Mind. Originally a martial art, Tai Chi has been refined into a flowing set of exercises. The sequence of movements stem from ordinary human life and are designed to engage and stimulate the human life force. For example, the first movement demonstrated was “Raising the Arms”. Sounds simple, but when watching Jenny move through the sequence, it was apparent that her whole body was engaged, from the toes right up to the top of her head. VIEW members saw her facial features firm, her breathing steady and her body move slowly, gracefully and oh so steadily as her arms raised and lowered in the simple movement. It was incredibly relaxing to watch and yet learn.

Traditional Chinese medicine prescribes exercise alongside herbal mixtures, acupuncture & other treatments and that’s where Tai Chi and Qigong come in. Their exercises allow bones as well as muscles to strengthen; breathing to even; blood flow to steady, creating a body in harmony. It was a welcome and most interesting presentation. VIEW Club meets again on 25 November, the Christmas Meeting. All are welcome to join in the fun. Please contact Carlien 0411 408 269
