Narooma Fuel leak investigation ongoing

NSW Fire and Rescue reported a fuel spill at Narooma’s Wharf Apartments on Wednesday 18 May 2022.

Fuel had entered one of the apartment elevator shafts. The BP service station located across the Princes Highway and opposite the Wharf Apartments was considered the likely source of the fuel. As the regulatory authority for underground petroleum storage systems, Eurobodalla Council has been investigating the matter.

Council has worked with Wharf Apartments and the petrol station over several months to try and locate the source of the leak and required the petrol station to undertake a broad range of site assessments and expert investigations. The Environment Protections Authority and Canberra Regional Joint Organisation’s Contaminated Lands Officer have provided additional advice and assistance.

Extensive investigations indicate the fuel tanks and lines are sound. The source of the leak remains unknown to date. There are no other fuel leaks nearby. Investigations into the source of the elevator-shaft fuel will continue.

The petrol station will aim to reopen this month, in accordance with underground petroleum storage system regulations and ongoing monitoring will be required.
