More open scrutiny of Council's General Manager and senior staff salaries?

While the renegotiated salary for the General Manager took nearly a year to finally be revealed to ratepayers may have seriously irked those "Usual Suspects" in the community who have an expectation of openness and transparency from Eurobodalla Council the latest Circular from the Office of Local Government might bring a hint that light might be shone in our otherwise dark corridors. The Minister for Local Government has announced a review of general manager and senior staff remuneration.

The Office of Local Government advise that a consultation paper has been issued to seek the views of the local government sector, other stakeholders and the broader community. All too often our Council fails to advise the community of these circulars that seek community input. The community is welcome, and invited, to make comment. Submissions should be made before 9 August 2021 The consultation paper is available on the Office of Local Government’s (OLG) website at here.

Currently, councils are free to determine the remuneration they pay to their general managers and senior staff based on a range of considerations including the skills and experience applicants bring to the role, the size and operational complexity of the council, market conditions and industry benchmarks.

Councils are required to publicly report on the remuneration they pay to their general managers and senior staff in their annual reports.

The consultation paper examines how executive remuneration is set in other jurisdictions and at other levels of government. It considers a range of options from maintaining the status quo through to introducing greater regulation of the remuneration councils may pay to their general managers and senior staff.

The fine balance between KPI accountability and justifiable remuneration.

NOTE: Comments were TRIALED - in the end it failed as humans will be humans and it turned into a pile of merde; only contributed to by just a handful who did little to add to the conversation of the issue at hand. Anyone who would like to contribute an opinion are encouraged to send in a Letter to the Editor where it might be considered for publication
