Residents of Surf Beach have once again raised their anger regarding the poor condition of Surf Beach Creek that continues to be a catchment area for foreign material that enters the creek from various inlets further up stream. Surf Beach was graded as Poor in 2019–2020, a similar result to the previous year. Elevated enterococci levels were often measured during dry weather conditions and after rainfall. In the last two years, the microbial water quality has continued to decline, and further investigation is recommended to show the scale and extent of the problem, and the source of microbial contamination. Council has continued to recommend residents and visitors to avoid swimming during and for at least one day following rainfall or if there are signs of stormwater pollution such as discoloured water and floating debris. Residents say that the creek in the past has been mechanically cleaned and maintained, however this has not been the case for some time. Eurobodalla Council have formally advised that the issue around the condition of the creek rests with Marine Parks saying "This area is considered a Batemans Marine Park Habitat protection zone. Council have been unable to gain permits to complete any works in the creek. Unfortunately, this is also impacting our ability to replace the nearby footbridge."
Council are advising residents with any concerns around the state of Surf Beach Creek in regards to conservation and maintenance to contact NSW Marine Parks on 4476 0807 or by emailing batemans@dpi.nsw.gov.au.
