Learn how to grow backyard veggies - SAGE Tuross Head workshop

The Tuross Head Community Garden will host a 3-hour veggie growing workshop on Saturday 7 September, presented by the experienced volunteer team from the SAGE Veggies for All program.

People attending the workshop will learn the basics of growing veggies and herbs with a focus on raised vegetable garden beds. Topics include soil preparation, watering, rotation, succession plantings, pests and fungal diseases, and soil and plant health. Everyone who attends will receive free seedlings, a planting and composting guide, and lunch.

The 3-hour workshop costs $15 and runs from 11am to 2pm. Anyone is welcome to attend, and Centrelink recipients from Eurobodalla will be eligible to receive a free, fully installed above ground veggie bed with soil, compost, mulch and seedlings. Participants can register to attend on the SAGE website www.sageproject.org.au/events , or email veggiesforall@sageproject.org.au , or phone 0467 558 645.

The Veggies for All program is one of the ways SAGE works towards creating and supporting a sustainable fair food economy and food sovereignty for local communities, so that everyone can access local, affordable and healthy food. Veggies for All has been running for three years and is made possible through a grant from the IMB Bank Community Foundation.

Kathryn Maxwell, SAGE Veggies for All program coordinator says that a backyard vegetable garden reduces household food shopping dollars and is a fun and healthy activity. ''We are very excited to be back at the Tuross Head Community Garden running another workshop. The site is an amazing example of a permaculture community garden and is a credit to the Tuross Head community,” Ms Maxwell said.

Tuross Head Community Garden Convener Steve Smith is also pleased to see the workshop at the gardens again. “This is the third year we have hosted a SAGE Veggies for All Workshop. Our members will put on a yummy lunch for workshop participants and will conduct tours of the community garden,” he said.
