Kristy McBain : Encouraging women to serve on Councils

During the bushfires then-Bega Valley Mayor led her community from the outset. Whereever she was needed she arrived and kept her community informed and included from day one with the commitment to deliver quality and timely communications. Her Bega Valley councillors were brought in from their Christmas holidays to attend emergency meetings and to deliver the immediate response required. Many in the South East looked at her leadership role during and after the bushfires and recognised it. She will long be remembered for her example during that challenging time in the Bega Valley and for how she performed her role in support and recovery. Now Ms McBain has stepped into Federal Parliament and once again is making a mark. This weekend the Member for Eden Monaro says "Women represent less than a third of all councillors and mayors serving on the 128 councils in NSW.

"September's Local Government Elections are a chance to address the balance and see more representative councils leading the way.

"I encourage women from all walks of life to put their hand up for election to Bega Valley Shire Council, Eurobodalla Shire Council, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Snowy Valleys Council, Yass Valley Council, and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
