Jaylah Hancock-Cameron Australia's Number 2 in women's Albie Thomas Mile

Jaylah Hancock-Cameron put in an outstanding performance in last night's Open women's Australian Albie Thomas Mile championship race, held at the Crest in Bankstown.

Above: Jaylah Hancock-Cameron celebrates with her Limitless Track Team squad coach, Andae Kalemusic. Jaylah's number one fan and mum, Leanne, offers her commentary "A line-up of very talented athletes, with Australia's very own Jess Hull up in the commentary box, we all knew there was going to be a display of some magic out on track.

"Jaylah got off to a good clean start, placing herself comfortably in the top 6 of the runners that were predicted to be where they were, as the race unfolded you could feel the build up to what was going to be a show down to the finish line.

"Yes it was our girl that made the move, hitting another gear, putting her in first position, she looked strong, she looked amazing, challenged in the home straight, only just being taken out, running in as Australia's number 2 for a mile, with a 6 second pb , taking the silver, n a $1200 cheque for her efforts!"

"Well done n congratulations to all the place getters , thankyou for keeping us on the edge of our seats screaming n willing our chosen one to the line, haha my apologies Broulee

"Thanks also to Bankstown sports athletics , all the volunteers that work behind the scenes, to bring together a race that has the interest from all corners of the globe!

"Super proud of you Jaylah Hancock-Cameron a huge congratulations to both you and coach Andae."

Sascha Ryner of Athletics Australia writes: Athletics Australia partnered with Athletics NSW and Bankstown Athletics Club to host the meet, with the national championship races now marking the official start of the Australian Summer of Athletics.

Athletics Australia CEO Peter Bromley said he was thrilled to add the event back to the Australian championship schedule.

“We’re excited to be collaborating with Athletics NSW once again to turn the Albie Thomas Mile into a race of national significance,” Bromley said.

“With Australia experiencing a resurgence in middle distance running, we have no doubt this meet will now attract more of the country’s best and we look forward to the race kicking off the domestic season.”

Athletics NSW Chair and host club Bankstown Athletics director Matt Whitbread added:

“We’re thrilled for the Albie Thomas Mile and the Australian Mile Championship to return in 2022, with more than $12,000 in prize money allocated for the meet and a full supporting program on offer to Australia’s best athletes.

The Albie Thomas has become a landmark single-day classic meet in Australian athletics and we are committed to further developing it and the Australian Mile Championships into a World Athletics Continental Tour Meet in coming years.”
