Food Donation project hopes to get excess food from supermarket donors into Eurobodalla community

Last week saw the Food Donation Network hosting a forum at the Eurobodalla Council which united community organisations with local supermarkets and other potential food donors. Supermarkets which attended the forum included Coles from Batemans Bay and Malua Bay IGA. The ALDI stores from Batemans Bay and Narooma are also involved in the project, as well as Batemans Bay Woolworths. The community organisations which attended the forum included South Coast Community Kitchen, Red Door Café, Meals on Wheels, St Vincent De Paul, SEARMS and Southern Care Pantry Club.

The Food Donation Network is a NSW Government funded project which aims to increase food donations in regional communities. By diverting food from landfills and into communities, the project will reduce greenhouse gases and will help those in need. Using an empowering and locally driven approach, the project will engage charities and supermarkets to work together in sustaining a long-term food donation program.

The project will reflect upon similar food donation programs and will target Eurobodalla Shire Council, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Wingecarribee Shire Council, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Snowy Valleys Council, Yass Valley Council, Hilltops Council and Upper Lachlan Shire Council.

The program encourages local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes to get on board with the Food Donation Network saying “Australia-wide, about $20 billion worth of food is thrown out every year and yet many in our community are struggling to get enough food on the table.”

“This initiative helps stop good food going to waste by giving it to some of the wonderful organisations that help our community’s most vulnerable.”
