Events and exhibitions for National History Week

National History Week photographic exhibition | Batemans Bay Saturday 3 September to Friday 9 September 2022

Where: Batemans Bay Library, Hanging Rock Place, Batemans Bay Cost: Free To mark History Week 2022, we’ve partnered with the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum for a display of historical photographs. Come along to see images from the early 1900s to the 1970s that feature families, businesses, local identities, sports, and activities in Batemans Bay. The photographs will also feature the Bimbimbie Gold Mine circa 1913. Along with the exhibition we’re hosting volunteers from the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum for a ‘speed dating’ style event where you can learn more about their work.

Saturday 3 September to Sunday 11 September 2022 Where: Moruya Library, Vulcan Street, Moruya Cost: Free To mark History Week 2022, we’ve partnered with the Moruya and District Historical Society for an exhibition of historical photographs - come and see the faces of people who helped build our community during the 1800s. Matching the History Week theme of ‘Hands on History’ the exhibition showcases people from the Moruya area who worked with their hands. From blacksmiths to dairy farmers, boat builders to convicts, these people worked hard for the good of their families and the region. Along with the exhibition we’re hosting volunteers from the Moruya and District Historical Society for a talk and Q&A session about convicts in the area. Among these volunteers is Wendy Simes editor of the recently released publication ASSIGNED exploring convicts in the Broulee Moruya District.

A morning with Batemans Bay Heritage Museum volunteers | Batemans Bay

Tuesday 6 September 2022

11am - 12pm

Where: Batemans Bay Library, Hanging Rock Place, Batemans Bay Cost: Free Join volunteers from the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum to celebrate National History Week with a ‘speed dating’ style session to get an overview of their work. Stop at the different tables manned by museum volunteers to learn more about family research, saving old technologies, exploring cemeteries, conservation and oral history. Attendees will have lots of fun browsing the tables, asking questions and sharing their own stories. Matching the week’s theme of ‘Hands on History’ attendees will also be able to touch items from the museum’s collection as they browse the tables. Along with this event historical photographs from the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum collection will be on display at Batemans Bay Library throughout History Week from Saturday 3 to Friday 9 September. Moruya Historical Society talk: convicts in the Moruya district | Moruya

Thursday 8 September 2022

11am - 12pm

Where: Moruya Library, Vulcan Street, Moruya Cost: Free To mark National History Week 2022, we’ve partnered with the Moruya and District Historical Society for a talk about convicts in the Moruya-Broulee areas. Wendy Simes, editor of the newly released publication ASSIGNED, will lead the discussion about convicts who came to the local area. Matching the week’s theme of ‘Hands-on History’, ASSIGNED sheds a light on the convict labour force who worked with their hands to clear the land, build fences and create prosperity. The publication also describes the convict masters, early landowners, and their properties. Come along to Moruya Library for a chance to learn about this fascinating era and the conditions in the area during the 1830s and 40s. Along with this talk, historical photographs from the Moruya and District Historical Society collection will be on display at Moruya Library throughout the week from Saturday 3 to Sunday 11 September.
