It might not be a Contiki tour for their gap year, but Eurobodalla Council is offering local youth the next best thing.
The Council has 16 jobs on offer through its annual trainee and apprentice program, which provides job opportunities for youth as well as older people looking for a career change.
Up for grabs are eight 12-month traineeships for under 21s. Seven will earn a certificate 3 in business admin through TAFE, specialising in business development, environmental services, finance, infrastructure support, customer service, community transport or property and commercial services, and one will gain a certificate 3 in individual support in Council’s community care team.
There are also eight open-aged apprenticeship and cadetships, comprising four civil construction apprenticeships, two plant operator apprenticeships, one electrical apprenticeship and one water and sewer cadet civil engineer.
Applications for the roles are now open and close Wednesday 22 September. All roles begin in February.
To help with the application process, Council is holding one-hour information sessions on Zoom, where applicants can learn what the jobs involve, hints and tips for resume writing and how to respond to selection criteria and interview questions.
Council’s senior learning and development officer Kate Brierley said Eurobodalla’s young folk had had a tough couple of years, and while overseas travel wasn’t an option right now, they still had exciting opportunities.
“Our school leavers have had a shocking two years – we can’t imagine what it’s been like to finish final years of schooling in the current climate,” she said.
“Council’s traineeship and apprenticeship program has always been about providing opportunities to local youth – and it’s needed now more than ever.
“Working at Council is a great way for school leavers to work in their gap year, consider what career they’re interested in, and get paid and earn a qualification in the process.”
The applicant information sessions will be held on Zoom on Tuesday 7 September, 10-11am, Wednesday 8 September 1-2pm and Thursday 9 September, 5.30-6.30pm.
