Bushfire Care Navigation Support – supporting your recovery

It’s common to feel stressed in the aftermath of a disaster, and the recent bushfires are no exception. The good news is that for most people these feelings will subside with time. However, if these reactions are seriously affecting your ability to participate in day to day activities, it's important to reach out for help! A new service is now available in the Shoalhaven and Southern NSW to help people connect with the right support services, through funding from COORDINARE – South Eastern NSW PHN. “We want to make it easier for those in need to be connected with timely and appropriate care services,” said Ms Dianne Kitcher, CEO of South Eastern NSW PHN. “The Care Navigators will offer advice on service availability and work with people requiring support for their physical and/or mental wellbeing. They will also be able to support people to connect with services to address other needs as required, such as housing, financial or practical assistance.” Care Navigators are available via telephone and online, and where appropriate within the community. Support will be provided to individuals and families affected by the bushfires. “Care Navigators will also liaise with local organisations including general practice, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and Local Health Districts, ensuring services are delivered in a culturally safe manner and support the needs of the local community,” she added. Ms Fiona Phillips MP, Member for Gilmore, said this funding is welcome news for the community, with anyone affected by the bushfires eligible to access the service. “There is so much support out there and sometimes it’s difficult to know what’s best for you and your family. You may require only short term support or something more ongoing, either way this new service will help to connect you to the most appropriate support for your needs,” she added. To reach out or for more information, please contact Barnardos Australia (Shoalhaven) by emailing familyreferral@barnardos.org.au or calling 1800 663 863, or contact MacKillop Family Services (Southern NSW) by emailing bushfiresupport@mackillop.org.au or calling 1300 736 384. This initiative is supported by funding from the Australian Government through the PHN Program.
