I congratulate the Bega Valley Shire Councillors, who today successfully voted to declare a climate emergency. The decision was as finely balanced there as here in Eurobodalla.
According to initial reports, our southern neighbours voted 4 for and 3 against. We had the exact opposite result here in Eurobodalla. It goes to show how every individual councillor's vote can be so critical to setting a direction and an intent for their Shires and those who live within them.
Bega's decision aligns them with the overwhelming worldwide scientific evidence that, not only is climate change real, but that we are at a critical juncture in time where ALL levels of government need to start taking the issue seriously.
Alas, Eurobodalla Shire Council could not even accept the use of the term 'climate change', never mind 'climate emergency' in its insipid alternative motion.
Well done Clr Cathy Griff, well done those who supported the motion and well done to the community members who heartily drove and supported this initiative.
Cheers, Pat McGinlay
