MAYORAL ELECTION WEDNESDAY An Extraordinary Meeting of Bega Valley Shire Council will be held at 10.00am on Wednesday, 6 May for the purposes of electing a Mayor for the period to September 2020. The meeting will be conducted via Zoom video conferencing and live streamed to Council’s website. The need for such a meeting follows the resignation of Cr Kristy McBain as Mayor on 1 May. Cr McBain has announced her intention to nominate as the Labor Candidate in the up-coming by-election for the federal seat of Eden-Monaro. Deputy Mayor Sharon Tapscott will take on the responsibilities of Mayor in the short term. The current Mayoral term runs until 16 September this year. On Wednesday, Councillors will elect a mayor who would see out the remaining five months before the scheduled mayoral election in September. The person elected as Mayor in September 2020 will then take Council through to the local government elections in September 2021. While Cr McBain has stepped aside as Mayor, she will continue to serve as a Councillor.
