Bega: Beaches closed due to shark attack

Surf Lifesavers are working with Council to close beaches in the area for the next 24 hours, from Wallagoot Lake down to Pambula after a woman in her 60s was transported to hospital after being bitten on the hip and thigh by a shark while swimming at Main Beach Merimbula on the far south coast.

At around 7am the SLSNSW State Operations Centre was alerted by police that a woman had been injured and was being taken to hospital.

Department of Primary Industries experts are investigating and are yet to advise on the type and size of the shark involved.

Surf Life Saving drones will launch this morning to conduct surveillance of the waters off Merimbula and will work with the DPI to monitor any marine activity.
