NSW RFS - Batemans Bay Brigade report:
Very Large Oil Spill On the Kings Highway
Just before 8:30am this morning our brigade alongside Nelligen Rural Fire Service, Rural Fire Service Braidwood Station & Office, the Eurobodalla Shire Council and South Coast Police District responded to reports of a large spill of oil from just past Lyons Rd to the very top of the Clyde.
Once crews arrived on scene a hazmat unit from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 217 Batemans Bay was called to investigate any possible environmental risks due to the large size of the spill. The Hazmat team determined that there was no environment risk from the spill.
All crews worked for hours to render the spill safe by adding down absorbent material to the road surface to ensure the road was no longer slippery and it was safe to travel on.
Many motorists slowed down while passing us but unfortunately several motorists sped up. Speeding past us while we are working on a roadway not only puts everyone in extreme danger, but it also adds time to the already long task ahead. So please next time when you pass an emergency service, remember that a few extra minutes of your time means that we can stay safe and finish our task quicker.
Bush Fire Behind Batemans Bay Hospital
Just before 6:30pm last night our brigade was called to reports of a bush fire behind the Batemans Bay Hospital.
Our crew arrived and assisted Fire and Rescue NSW Station 217 Batemans Bay with mopping up the fire in incredibly steep terrain. Due to a quick response from both services there was no damage to any property and the fire was able to be contained and extinguished within the hour.
