Annual hard waste collection starts next week

Eurobodalla Council will kick off its annual hard waste collection next week, starting in the south of the shire next Monday.

The kerbside collection will begin around Tilba and Akolele from July 12, before making its way north and finishing in South Durras in mid September.

The collection will enable households on domestic garbage collection to dispose of unwanted items too bulky for their household bins; including fridges, microwaves, carpet, garden tools and furniture.

The council’s Waste Services Manager Nathan Ladmore advised the collection had a maximum limit of two cubic metres and residents could help by separating furniture and junk from any metal items on the kerb.

“Three separate collection vehicles will visit each street. One truck will collect metal to be taken to the waste management facilities for recycling, another will collect items such as fridges, freezers and air conditioning units so they can be degassed before recycling. All other items will be collected by the third truck,” Mr Ladmore said.

Mr Ladmore said people should put their waste out just before their area collection date, “it keeps everyone safe and our neighbourhoods a little tidier”.

Waste that won’t be collected includes televisions and computer products such as monitors and printers. These can be taken to Council’s waste management facilities free of charge all year round. Other bulky items that will not be collected and should be taken to a waste facility include mattresses, tyres, motor vehicle parts, building materials and vegetation.

In addition, chemicals and hazardous material such as paint, petrol and oil will not be collected – residents should drop these off for free at one of Council’s Household Chemical Cleanout collections later this year. Cooking oil, motor oil and paint can also be taken to the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Surf Beach anytime.
