2020 Pennant Season Underway

The 2020 Pennant season has started with a historic twist to the competition. The competition is now ‘open’ meaning that all eligible men and women can play in the competition. To be eligible a person needs to be registered with Bowls NSW. Many of the Clubs in our competition district have had women register so they can play with the men.

Tuross has two sides entered in the competition – a Grade 5 side and a Grade 6 side. The Grade 6 side is a promotion from recent seasons after winning Grade 7 last year. In Round One the Grade 5 side was at home to Moruya and the Grade 6 side travelled to Dalmeny.

The Grade 5 clash turned out to be a real nail biter! Very little separated the two sides throughout until Tuross pulled ahead to lead by 11 shots on the ‘master board’ with just a combined 9 ends to play. However, Moruya dominated these ends and picked up 15 shots to the host’s 4 to see the match end up a tie at 56 shots each. Tuross won two of the three rinks to have a narrow 5.5 to 4.5 overall win.

For Tuross Joel Hilliard won 19 – 14; Noel Downie won 22 – 17 and Gail Page went down 15 – 25.

In the Grade 6 match Dalmeny started the better and quickly opened up a big lead on the master board. However, the Tuross teams gradually made their way into the game and the scores were 39 all after a combined 48 ends. At this stage Dalmeny regrouped and they were able to pull away to record a 52 to 43 shot victory. Tuross managed to win one rink meaning that the final result was a 9 points to 1 win to the home side.

For Tuross Ray Downey’s team managed a 18 – 12 win while Doug Williams’ team lost 15 – 18 and Stan Peck’s foursome went down 22 – 10.

Next week the Grade 5 side travels to Malua Bay while the Grade 6 side will host Braidwood.
