A new PB and a 2nd place puts Jaylah in a strong position at the Youth Olympics

At 5:50am Australian Eastern Standard Time there were a host of family and friends across the country glued to their computer screens watching Broulee's Jaylah Hancock-Cameron compete in the first heat of the 1500m at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From the outset it was going to be a hard race. She was ranked fourth going into that race and 7 seconds behind Ednah Jebitok of Kenyah. The lineup looked daunting. JEBITOK Edinah KEN 4:11.00 AZROUR Meryeme MAR 4:17.80 KANEMITSU Yuki JPN 4:18.26 HANCOCK-CAMERON Jaylah AUS 4:19.21 KAZIMIERSKA Klaudia POL 4:19.27

But run she did. Like the wind and came in second behind Jebitok with a personal best of 4:18.44. The next step in this two stage race is the cross country component which will then determine an outright winner for medals. In the distance events of 1500m, 3000m, 2000m SC / Cross-Country all athletes compete in one heat of their individual events Jayah has competed now in Stage 1 coming second. All athletes will now compete in a Cross-Country race The placings of athletes in each individual event and in the Cross-Country race will be added to determine the overall final placings with the athlete having the lowest total score being the overall winner (i.e. an athlete placed 2nd in the 3000m and 4th in the Cross-Country race will receive six points which will count as the total score) Jaylah's next (and final) event is scheduled for Monday.
