Remember to Vote Responsibly

Dear Beagle Editor

I read recently that the NSW Liberal Government has ‘gifted’ $700,000 toward a new greyhound race track in Goulburn. That’s a total of $1.2m ‘gifted’ so far to this industry that relies on gambling as its primary income. An industry that destroys as ‘wastage’ thousands of beautiful greyhounds who can no longer serve their purpose ie to make money for their owners and the government.

$1.2m would go a long way toward assisting animal sanctuaries and shelters, particularly in this time of an historical drought. These kind people who run these sanctuaries and shelters take in and care for animals out of the goodness of their hearts. None of them receive any subsidies from the government.

Mike Baird had it right when he tried to ban this ‘sport’. The Libs got rid of a good man. And Luke Foley jumped in and defended the ‘industry’. Sad. No one with a conscience would support any politician who turns a blind eye to animal cruelty and instead supports a culture of gambling and the misery attached to this horrid addiction that ruins countless lives.

Why do we need a ‘Minister for Racing’? We may as well change that title to ‘Minister for Animal Cruelty and Gambling’.

“Remember to gamble responsibly” – after spending millions on advertising promoting this highly addictive past time, this little ‘gem’ is slotted in at the end.
