A chance to hear Adhoc Baroque's 'Nightingale in the Cage' concert, in Braidwood in April! Passionate Italian repertoire, the full ensemble will consist of Greta Claringbould, soprano, Maartje Sevenster, mezzo-soprano, Robyn Mellor and Olivia Gossip, recorders, Clara Teniswood, cello, Rachel Walker, viola da gamba, and Peter Young, keyboard and direction. In “The Nightingale in the Cage” the recorders evoke the image of the caged nightingale, a common one, perhaps a poignant reminder of the life of the singer. Many famous singers of the era of the music performed were castrati and their voices were itself cages within which life was lived. The bird is often the symbol of the lover imprisoned by unrequited love.
