Tuross Head Men’s Bowls news

The 2017 Pennant Season started last Saturday with the Tuross sides having mixed success. The Grade 5 travelled to Moruya to take on the defending champions in this division and found the opposition far too good.

Moruya won all three rinks. Joel Hilliard’s team where competitive all day and at 17 – 15 down with four ends to be played, had every chance to win. However, the Moruya team won three of the last 4 ends to win 21 – 16.

John Fahey’s side played well and had plenty of good bowls but Craig Connor, the Moruya skip, played a great game to guide his side home. Noel Downie’s four had a day to forget with the Moruya team far too good on the day.

Overall Moruya won 10 – 0 by the margin of 89 – 41.

The Grade 7 team had much more success at home to Tomakin. Ian Wratten’s team led the way with a strong 30 – 14 victory, winning the last 6 ends 14 – 2!

Ronnie Richardson’s side had to hold off a very strong finish from Tomakin. After 14 ends Richardson led 21 – 6 but then lost the next five ends by 12 shots to see their lead cut to 3 shots. A shot on the 20th end gave them some breathing space and they just managed to hang on when Tomakin scored three shots on the last end. Tuross had a narrow 22 – 21 win!

The third rink was a low scoring thriller with the result up in the air until the last bowl was played. Jim Madden’s Tuross team was locked 12 all with their Tomakin opponent with just 2 ends to play. Madden grabbed 3 shots on the 20th end but saw Tomakin do the same on the last end to see the game end a 15 all draw.

As a result Tuross had a 9.5 to 0.5 win scoring 67 shots to 50. A great start to the season.

In the second round to be played on February 10 the Grade 5 side are home to Malua Bay while the Grade 7 side travels to Bodalla.
