Chris O’Connor CD launch at Murrah Hall

The South Coast launch of Chris O’Connor’s CD “ I asked for Water” will take place in the wonderful intimate Murrah Hall South of Bermagui.
The CD is a tribute to some favourite blues artists including Tommy Johnson, Blind Blake, Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton.
O’Connor has long championed music from these 1920s masters and accompanies himself with authentic fingerpicking and bottleneck playing on small-bodied guitars and his trusty steel bodied resonator.
For this show, he will be joined by piano professor Don Hopkins and harmonica ace Damian Coen.
Don has been a mainstay of Sydney’s blues scene since the 1970s. He was a member of and songwriter for Jim Conway’s Big Wheel and backed international acts such as Chicago harmonica great Carey Bell. Performing with percussionist Rob Grosser as “Dr Don’s Double Dose” he came 2nd in the 2012 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennesee.
Damian is well known to South Coast audiences, having a reputation for his lyrical old-time harmonica playing and insightful songwriting. In the 1980s Damian founded the jug band “The Mudsteppers”. More recently Damian has released two critically acclaimed albums of original material with his band “The Fathers of Necessity”.
Expect a diverse and entertaining evening in the atmospheric Murrah Hall with solo, duo and trio configurations, playing everything from ragtime and jug band songs to rollicking train songs and lonesome bottleneck blues.
From the Delta slide of Charley Patton to the Piedmont ragtime of Blind Blake, O’Connor stamps his own imprint on a rich musical heritage.
