Lakeside Triples Bowls Carnival

The Men’s Bowling Club hosted a very successful Carnival On Wednesday July 13 and Thursday July 14 with 28 teams filling both greens. Players came from as far away as Sydney, Wollongong, the ACT, Wagga and Bega to compete with entrants from nearby clubs and locals for over $4,000 prize money.

Since its inception this Carnival has been sponsored by St Johns Park Bowling Club but unfortunately they were unable to continue this support. Club GM, Stephen Hodges, stepped in to fill the breach and organised sponsorship from four new sources. Great thanks go to Eurobodalla Fire Service, Cyclonic Roof Restorations, Carlton United and Coca Cola Amatil for their support.

As with all of our major events the Tuross Head Country Club is a major support in a number of ways. They donate raffle prizes, green fees are waived and visitors are given member status for any purchases they make. The efforts of the bar staff, the wonderful greenkeepers and the administration staff contribute greatly to the success of the event.

This year Bega bowlers Ron and Reg George and Howard Blacker came first by winning all seven of their games – the only side to have a perfect record. They shared $1800 in prize money. Second place, and $1200, went to Tomakin’s Ken Franklin who teamed with Weston Creek players Bruce Waugh and Ian Whybrow.

Local players, Alan Mcleod, Peter Bird and Ron Cox won five games, had a draw and one loss to come in third.

Three teams managed five wins and two losses so the minor places were decided by ‘shot margins’. Fourth Place went to Belconnen players Jamie Freeman, Peter McGuiness and Adam Jeffery. Yowani player Phil Beggs continued the success of the Canberran visitors when he teamed with Narooma’s Greg Ryan and Ray Gale to come in fifth, The final prize went to Keith Austin, Peter Jeffs and Barry Thurlow from Malua Bay.

Congratulations to Andrew Farrington and his team for another very well run Carnival. It was especially pleasing to see the number of local players who supported this event with 37 men and women taking part.
