The shifting sands of Batemans Bay CBD parking

The Beagle Editor

Six or so months ago a majority of our elected councillors agreed to do away with “pay parking” in Batemans Bay after being lobbied by some of the Batemans town and business folk.

The contentious areas where it was necessary to pay a small fee to park were considered an impost on adjacent businesses who argued that their clients were being targeted while other businesses were being supported by free and longer parking times. These once contentious spots are now congested parking areas not monitored or policed, agitating the same people who wanted “pay parking” removed thinking an improvement in business activities would occur as a result. The problems with businesses in Batemans Bay and profitable turnovers is more about ease of parking access and appearance. Recent changes made to the shopping and retail precinct have encourage shoppers to the more modern areas of the Bay’s CBD. That’s now the reality.
