AWL Eurobodalla All Creatures Bright and Beautiful By President Gabe Eichler
THE end of 2016 is nearly upon us and as I sit back and reflect on the animal welfare year we have had, I wonder how we fitted it all in. Just like Santa stuffing all the goodies in his sack and emptying it out again, there is so much that goes in that needs to go back out again to care for all things bright and beautiful.
This year, the AWL Eurobodalla Branch has seen some changes. It is all about moving forward to a fresher, brighter and happier future for all creatures great and small. The AWL Narooma Dog Training Club became a stand-alone branch which focuses on agility and training of dogs, so our branch, AWL Eurobodalla, focuses on caring for and rehoming surrendered animals; de-sexing and helping those less fortunate with companion animals in the community. We are all volunteers and the love and dedication to the animals in this branch is quite overwhelming and mirrored by the success rate in re-homing. We had a huge influx of over 60 kittens, some as young as two weeks, and 99% made it to their forever homes. Over 20 dogs are now happy dogs with new owners and we even helped a ferret and a rabbit who are now smiling as much as ferrets and rabbits can.
Eurobodalla, like all AWL branches, receives no government funding of any type, so we need to continually fundraise, and rely solely on the kind community and visitors to this wonderful area.
This year we organised a number of successful events, including a Trivia Night at Malua Bay Bowling and Recreation Club; several Sausage Sizzles including Bunnings at Batemans Bay and the Federal Election held at Tuross. Our annual events such as Tailwaggers, the Garage Sales in the north and south, as well as various markets were supported by this wonderful community. A special mention and thank-you go out to all the businesses and organisations who directly support and donate: Petstock at Batemans Bay, Bay Theatre Players, Whale Coast Reality, all the Eurobodalla Vets and their suppliers.
So, for me, looking back, there is a lot that has happened and we will continue to be like Santa’s Elves: always busy. Busy helping all creatures because the love we give to the animals we give a new life to is unconditional.
Please help if you can. We particularly need new carers for dogs and we have several adult cats available for adoption who would love a home before Christmas. For more details phone Elaine on 0410 016 612. AWL promotes responsible pet ownership and all our animals are vet-checked, de-sexed, vaccinated and wormed.
